Robert Kenny, vice president and general manager with General Cable, was inducted into the Ohio Iota chapter of Tau Beta Pi at Ohio Northern University as an eminent engineer during a ceremony held Nov. 4.

Kenny graduated from Ohio Northern with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering in 1988. Eighteen ONU undergraduates also were initiated into the Ohio Iota chapter, which was founded in 1973.
 
 Kenny has been vice president and general manager of data communications cables for General Cable since June 2007. In October 2009, he assumed the additional responsibility for leadership of the company’s Telecommunications Team.

Kenny has more than 20 years of experience in the wire and cable field, holding several senior-level management positions in technology, marketing and general management with Belden and ADC/Krone.

Prior to joining General Cable, Kenny was the global business and technology manager for DuPont’s Cabling Solutions Division, where he was instrumental in creating several premise cable patents.

Kenny is recognized as a technology and commercial leader within the communications industry and has presented on the subject in more than 25 countries.

In 2009, the Wire & Cable Manufacturers’ Alliance (WCMA) named him as the recipient of its 2009 Distinguished Career Award. He has been a part of key innovations within the wire and cable industry and currently is named on more than 20 U.S. patents.

The eminent engineer category of Tau Beta Pi membership is used for candidates who were not initiated as undergraduates, who earned a degree from a recognized engineering college more than 10 years ago and who have achieved distinction in the field of engineering. Eligibility is based upon their attainments as a practicing engineer; he or she is the type of professional person all undergraduates should strive to emulate.
 
Tau Beta Pi was founded in 1885 to mark in a fitting manner those who have conferred honor upon their alma mater by distinguished scholarship and exemplary character as undergraduates in the field of engineering, or by their attainments as alumni in the field of engineering, and to foster a spirit of liberal culture in the engineering colleges.
