Dustin Brooks speaker to Ada Kiwanis
Myrna McCurdy called the 13th meeting (January 8th) of the 2012–2013 Kiwanis Year to order at 12:00 noon at the New China Restaurant, Ada.
The invocation was presented by Jon Umphress.
The birthday of member Ann Donnelly-Hamilton (January 5th) was noted.
The membership anniversaries of Claudia Crawford (January 6, 1998;) and Saundra Neely (January 8) were also noted.
In business:
-Members heard an updated financial report from Treasurer Bryan Marshall.
-A Kiwanis Division 2 and 3 Council Meeting will be held on Wednesday January 23rd at Milano’s Café in Lima. Lanton Lee, Area Director, American Region of Kiwanis International will present a workshop titled “Achieving Club Excellence”. Myrna McCurdy and our Lieutenant Governor (Linda Steinbrunner) are asking for all of our club leaders to plan on being at this meeting. Brian Myers, Myrna McCurdy, Jon Umphress, Jeff, Schulman and Bill Fuller are planning to attend
-On Wednesday January 15th there will be is a Kiwanis Webinar meeting from 8-9 pm to help us use twitter for information and as growth opportunities
-On January 31, 2013, there will be a meeting for the Ohio District Convention in Lima at Beery Insurance, 1240 W Market St., Lima at 6:00 pm. Chairpersons will be appointed, a and a schedule of future meetings will be established. The Ada club will be in charge of the basket room for the silent
-The Ohio Kiwanis Mid-year Education Day will be March 9 in Lewis Center at the Conference Center at North Pointe. Jeff Schulman and Jon Umphress are planning to attend.
-The club agreed to explore a satellite club for those that are unable to attend regular meetings.
-Three notes of thanks were read: Restore, for our donation to the Beacon Fund; Head Start for a donation of books to the children; and The Ada Herald: for helping to support the newspaper.
-Kiwanis Education Minute: The first Kiwanis Club outside of N. America was founded in Vienna in 1963 sponsored by Chapter KC of Cleveland, OH.
-Something to consider: From a 59 year old “I’ve learned that happiness is like perfume: you can’t give it away without getting a little on yourself. “ And from a 6 year old “ I’ve learned that goldfish do not like jello.”

Kiwanian Dustin Brooks of Ada’s Edward Jones office gave a three part program.
Part 1 involved an explanation of some of the effects of the Fiscal Cliff avoidance agreement and how that may affect us along with some other items that went into effect this year.
Part 2: He discussed a handout on Charting the Years” Things that people will start to forget including in 2036, the majority of Americans will be too young to remember 911. In 2040, the majority of Americans will be too young to remember Hurricane Katrina. In 2025, the majority of Americans will be too young to remember the Soviet Union.
Part 3: He discussed some his fascination with science including some different discussions of how our eyes work to see various colors and adjust for their moving to see things including an explanation of how computer/TV screens with red, green, and blue pixels work to get us to perceive yellow.
The Ada Kiwanis Club meets each Tuesday at 12:00 noon at McIntosh Center, ONU. Guests are always welcome.
