Ohio Northern University’s Rebecca Yeh, a third-year pharmacy student from Nisswa, Minn., finished as fourth runner-up in the 2014 Miss America pageant Sunday night in Atlantic City, N.J.
This marks the second consecutive year that ONU has had one of its students represented at the Miss America pageant. Elissa McCracken competed in last year’s competition as Miss Ohio.
ONU President Daniel A. DiBiasio said, “Ohio Northern congratulates Rebecca’s top five finish at the Miss America pageant. The ONU community is extremely supportive and very proud of what she has accomplished.”
Earlier in the week, Yeh took top honors in the pageant’s talent competition with a performance on the violin and was awarded a $2,000 scholarship. She has been a self-employed violin instructor since the age of 13 and performs regularly as a soloist, as a member of a string trio, and occasionally as part of a string quartet.
Yeh was crowned Miss Minnesota 2013 after representing the Detroit Lakes, Minn., area as Miss Northwest at the Eden Prairie High School Performing Arts Center on June 15.
Yeh recently completed her second-year year at ONU, where she is preparing for a career as a clinical pharmacist. Accepted into the highly selective doctorate of pharmacy program, and appearing on the Dean’s List for the past two semesters, she is a “triple-A” scholarship recipient (academics, arts and athletics) and an accomplished violinist.
Yeh’s service platform is titled “A Voice for Autism,” which was inspired by her 22-year-old brother, Phil, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of 4. As Miss Minnesota 2013,
Yeh speaks and educates people about early detection and public awareness of this disorder, which affects 1.5 million individuals. She also is the official spokesperson for Children’s Miracle Network and the work they do in Minnesota.
