Council street committee discussion: Eat, drink, sell goods on downtown sidewalks?
The street committee of village council met Tuesday evening to discuss sidewalk use.
Can a business put signs or merchandise on the sidewalk? What about tables and chairs in front of a restaurant? Can a business that sells alcoholic beverages serve customers while sitting in a cafe-style seating arrangement on the sidewalk?
Issues of safety, liability, and freedom to do business were discussed.
Some committee members, the mayor, other village officials, and members of the public had differing views.
Some said there should be no local laws pertaining to these issues, others proposed strict rules, still others voiced a middle ground.
In any case, the issue was not resolved and will be discussed at the next committee meeting before going to council with a recommendation.
Have an opinion? If so, you are welcome to attend the next street committee meeting to be heard on this issue.
