HealthWise residency program receives grant
The Ohio Northern University HealthWise residency program has received an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Foundation Pharmacy Residency Expansion Grant for the 2016-17 residency year.
The grant, totaling $25,000, will be used to provide financial support for the training of an additional Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY1) resident. The overarching goal of the ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Residency Expansion Grant Program is to expand the number of ASHP-accredited PGY1 and PGY2 pharmacy residency positions for the 2016-17 training year.
The PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at ONU HealthWise provides the opportunity to work in an extremely innovative health care setting. ONU HealthWise is an interdisciplinary team of pharmacists, nurses, exercise physiologists and nutritionists that serves Hardin County citizens and the employees and students of ONU.
As a clinical pharmacist on the team, the resident provides primary patient care, including management of diabetes mellitus, anticoagulation, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, smoking cessation and preventive medicine. The resident is also involved in care transitions patients recently discharged from the hospital or long-term care facility. ONU HealthWise residents complete a teaching certificate program, which includes providing small- and large-group instruction, instructional and learning theory, experiential teaching in patient care activities, and supervising patient and healthcare provider education through the ONU Drug and Health Information Center. The resident completes a longitudinal project focused on patient care, and presents the work at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, as well as the annual Ohio Pharmacy Residency Conference.
