Sunday candlelight vigil focuses on presidential transition
Allen-Hardin County Day of Action organization will hold a candlelight vigil in Bluffton on Sunday, Jan. 15, to voice quesitons in the transition period from the Nov. 8 election day to the presidential inauguration on Jan. 21.
Persons interested in participanting will meet at the Bluffton post office, 132 S. Main St. After a brief sharing time, the group will walk to Bluffton’s town hall, 154 N. Main St.
According to event planners, "The purpose of this gathering is to voice questions that have risen in the transition period from election day to the inauguration Jan. 21.
"Feelings have run high, ranging from confusion to excitement to fury. Citizens are concerned about the prospect of repealing the Affordable Care Act without public medical coverage to replace it and about the proposed and soon-to-be-appointed cabinet officials who have not yet been through the required ethics reviews, among other issues."
The event was inspired by the Day of Action joined by more than 60 organizations including national groups such as MoveOn, People’s Action, and National Nurses United.
"Attenders to all these gatherings are asked to commit to law-abiding, non-violent behavior, respecting the dignity of every individual there. Participants are encouraged to bring a candle in a jar," said Maya Fischoff of Ada, one of the planners for the event.
The decision to host the local version of the National Day of Action was made by A.H.E.A.D. (Allen and Hardin for Election Action & Democracy), an organization of local activists who worked together on the recent Democratic presidential campaign.
