Icon: How did you hear about ONU?
Hyo Jeong:
After I’d made a decision to study abroad, I was given the list of universities that I could choose from. I noticed that ONU had a lot of English major classes. I really wanted to improve my English and knew, as Ada is a very small village, there wouldn’t be a lot of Koreans, so I gave it a try. 

Sessions held on Thursdays from March 5 to April 16

Applications are being accepted for the 2019 Citizens Sheriff’s Academy offered by the Hardin County Sheriff and Ada native Keith Everhart.

The academy takes place from 6 to 8:30 p.m., on consecutive Thursdays from March 5 to April 16, at the sheriff’s office, 1025 S. Main St., Kenton.

The academy offers participants with a working knowledge of the sheriff’s office. It covers various aspects of the sheriff’s responsibilities via classroom discussion and hands-on participation.

Cuyahoga  County (Ohio) Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas  Gilson will provide an update on the current state of the opioid crisis in Ohio during a brown-bag seminar at noon Monday, Feb. 10, in the McIntosh Center Wishing Well at Ohio Northern University.

The event, which is sponsored by the Northern Opioid Alliance, is free and open to the public.

Gilson has been the director of the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner and Crime Laboratory since 2011. He has previously served as chief medical examiner for the State of Rhode Island as well as a deputy chief medical examiner for the City of New York, state of New Hampshire, and state of Connecticut.

Ada VFW Post 9381 will host a corn hole tournament beginning at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 8. Registration starts at 1 p.m.

The entry fee is $25 per team. The first team to score 21 points is the winner. Trophies are awarded to the top three teams.

The event also includes a 50/50 drawing plus additional raffles during the day. Food will also be available.

These groups have more than 25 years of volunteer service

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District 1 recognizes the following Ada groups who have participated in Adopt-a-Highway for more than 25 years:

  • Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, Ohio Northern University, who maintain a stretch of State Route 235
  • Zeta Tau Alpha, Delta Theta, Ohio Northern University, who maintain a stretch of State Route 701
  • Ada Lions Club, who maintain a stretch of State Route 309
  • Ada FFA, who maintain a stretch of State Route 81

These groups earned service awards this week, signed by ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks and District 1 Deputy Director Chris Hughes.

Ada cancels school on Friday, Feb. 7

For the second day in a row wintery weather forced Ada schools to cancel classes. The announcement was made on Ohio Alerts at 7:53 a.m.
