ONU Symphony to perform Oct. 15
The ONU Symphony will perform at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15 in the Freed Center. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for ONU faculty and staff, $10 for seniors, and $5 for students. The Freed Center box office is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Phone orders are accepted with American Express, MasterCard, VISA or Discover by calling 419-772-1900. Tickets also are available online at ticketing.onu.edu.
ONU Music Director Travis Jürgens will conduct this opening concert, which features works by Austrian and German composers, including Wagner’s “Overture to Rienzi.” Based on Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s novel “Rienzi, the Last of the Roman Tribunes,” it tells the story of a man who rises to power on the strength of his vow to make Rome a great city once again.
The program also features a concert suite from “The Dark Knight” by Hans Zimmer and J.S. Bach’s “Komm, süsser Tod,” arranged by Leopold Stokowski, who conducted the Philadelphia Orchestra and the music for “Fantasia.”
Additionally, ONU student Paige Stafford, a winner of the concerto competition, will perform Weber’s “Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor.” Stafford is a sophomore music performance major from Jamestown, N.Y.
The program will finish with Haydn’s “Symphony No. 100” (the Military Symphony), a groundbreaking work, which includes the auxiliary percussion instruments bass drum, triangle and cymbals. Inclusion of these “Turkish” percussion instruments gives the music a military flavor and was considered a novelty at the time.
