Sam Quinones, author of “Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic,” will deliver a talk at noon on Thursday, Oct. 18 in the Freed Center. The talk is free and open to the public.

 

“Dreamland,” which was published in 2015, chronicles how the drug epidemic tore apart the once thriving community of Portsmouth, Ohio. In the award-winning book, Quinones looks at how dependency upon painkillers devastated the southern Ohio city.

 

The problem was largely fueled by the emergence of OxyContin, a painkiller with devastatingly addictive properties. The story is repeated throughout countless small, rural towns and suburbs across America.

ADA - The Ada boys soccer team lost at home to Upper Sandusky 3-2 Thursday evening in the regular season finale.

The Bulldog boys dropped to 8-6-1 overall and 3-3-1 in NCOSA play with the defeat.

Bulldog junior Isaac Spar and senior Chris Reyes tallied the Ada goals.

Bulldog junior keeper Drew Hadley was credited with eight saves in goal.

Ada visits Oak Harbor in first round Div. III sectional play Monday, October 15. The winner advances to play at Willard October 17.

History buffs and artists will be especially interested in the public unveiling of a painting on a barn in Hardin County. Scott Hagan, the man who painted each of the 88 Ohio Bicentennial barns, is completing one of Jacob Parrott, the first Medal of Honor recipient in the U.S. for his service in the Civil War.

The unveiling will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday on a barn owned by Arthur and Charlene Bingham at 19691 US 68 south of Kenton.  The barn is located two miles north of the Hardin-Logan County line.

Saturday's Contest: The contest features a battle of upper division OAC schools and is ONU's first home game since Sept. 15, a span of 28 days. ONU is 535-493-36 in 124 seasons of play, a winning percentage of .518. ONU and JCU are in a 3-way tie for third place in the OAC with Baldwin Wallace with 3-1 records.
