ADA — Ohio Northern had five players score in double figures and shot 59 percent from the floor in a 101-91 victory over No. 13-ranked Marietta on Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears (6-7 overall, 4-2 Ohio Athletic Conference) got 19 points each from seniors Devon Allen (Lima/Senior), Konnor Baker (Ada) and Aron Thress (Lancaster/Amanda-Clearcreek).

The Polar Bears meet Baldwin Wallace at 7 p.m. on Wednesday In the ONU Sports Center.

Ken Collins gives us a Saturday morning view of his thermometer. The temp eventually reached 1 below with the wind-chill even worse. We looked for people to photograph braving the frigid weather, but no one was outside. Duh. Hark! Expect mid 40s Tuesday, even 50s Thursday. Hang on.

Dennis "Doc" Garbrecht was listed in fair condition Saturday evening at Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus following a fire at his home, 301 E. North Ave., on Thursday morning. His wife, Peg, who was also home at the time, was uninjured.

The fire began in the laundry room, but what ignited the fire has not been determined yet. The two-story home was a total loss.
Four fire departments responded to the fire in very cold weather, battling the blaze for five hours. The Garbrechts were alerted to a fire by a smoke detector.

ADA - A two-week layoff did nothing to dull the shooting eye of the Crestview girls basketball team.

The visiting Lady Knights shot over 60 percent from the field and also employed a tough defense to stifle Ada 75-35 and record a convincing Northwest Conference victory Thursday night.

The Lady Bulldogs had their three-game win streak snapped as they fell to 4-4 overall and 0-3 in NWC action. Crestview improved to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the NWC with their third consecutive victory.

ADA — A late effort by the Ohio Northern men's basketball team came up short as Northern fell 60-50 to Otterbein Wednesday evening at the Rike Center.

The Polar Bears fall to 5-7 overall and 3-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Cardinals move to 6-6, 2-3.

Northern was led offensively by senior Devon Allen (Lima/Senior) with a team high 13 points and a game-high five assists.

Senior Konnor Baker (Ada) chipped in 11 points and added six rebounds.

Senior Aron Thress (Lancaster/Amanda Clearcreek) grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to lead Northern defensively.

Lena Smith, age 87 went to be with the Lord on January 4, 2017 at Hardin Hills Health Center, Kenton, Ohio. She was born on March 8, 1929 in Bell County, Kentucky.

Lena was a homemaker and a member of the Missionary Baptist Church of LaFayette.

Surviving are two sons: Jabe (Jenny) Smith of Corbin, KY and Theodore "Ted" (Margaret) Smith of Harrod; two daughters: Ora (Ellis) Puckett of Alger and Pat (Terry) Kessinger of Centertown, KY; and seventeen grandchildren,thirteen great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
