McVey wins Great Lakes Region race
SHELBYVILLE, Ind. — Senior All-American Ian McVey (Stow/Munroe Falls) and classmate Spencer Schulze (St. Henry) earned All-Great Lakes Region honors Saturday afternoon, guiding the Ohio Northern men's cross country team to a 10th-place effort in a highly-competitive, 38-team field at the 2018 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional held at Blue River Memorial Park.
"The Polar Bears are 97-29 overall this season.
ONU has now finished among the top-10 teams in the region for 15 consecutive seasons.
McVey successfully defended his individual championship title from the 2017 campaign and booked his third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships after pacing the field by better than 13 seconds. His 24:52.5 clocking set a new 8k course record and is the third time this season that the senior has finished under 25 minutes.
With the win, the senior has won six individual meet titles in the 2018 season.
Meanwhile, Schulze raced to a 25:58.1 finish to capture the 28th overall spot, which earned him All-Region honors for the first time in his career.
The tandem garners the accolades after ending among the top-35 overall finishers, the cut-off for receiving All-Region honors.
