Q: When is a dog like a reindeer?
By Monty Siekerman
For several years, Ohio Northern students have had a dozen or so dogs living with them on campus.
For a year, the college students train the pups to be service dogs. The dogs go to classes, the dining hall, and many activities to learn socialization. The students also take time with the pups to train them to sit, stay, walk properly, and teach them other commands.
After a year on campus, the dogs are evaluated to determine the best fit for being a service dog with someone with a disability. Then, the pups gain rigorous training for a person with a specific disability before being placed with a person.
