Ada HS swimmer advance to state...again
By Cort Reynolds
BOWLING GREEN - Ada junior Klava Katayama finished second in two events at the Div. II swim districts hosted by Bowling Green State University Friday evening to qualify for a third consecutive visit to the state meet at Canton.
Katayama took second in the 50-yard freestyle and second in the 100 butterfly race to qualify for the state meet at Canton in both events.
Katayama will compete Feb. 21-22 at the 43rd annual girls Ohio state meet. The boys state meet is being held for the 92nd time.
Girls Div. II swim preliminaries start at 5 p.m. Thursday, February 21 at Canton's C.T. Branin Natatorium. The top 16 in an event make it to the Div. II race finals starting at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22.
The top two finishers in any race from the various district meets automatically made it to Canton. The next fastest times filled out the at-large qualifiers to state in each event.
Katayama's exploits helped Ada finish 18th in the district team standings. Toledo St. Ursula Academy took the team crown. Lexington captured the boys team title.
In 2018, Katayama completed the 50-yard free B finals in a time of 24.71 to finish eighth in that heat, and 16th overall.
Last year, Katayama also tied for 18th among a field of 24 in the 100 butterfly semifinal prelims with a time of 58.49.
As a freshman, Katayama made it to the state meet at Canton in the 50 free, where she finished 17th.
Ada junior Isaac Spar finished 25th at the district meet in the 100 butterfly. Last year he came in 26th at the district event in the 100 fly. This year, he shaved .89 off his time.
