Ada's Katayama in two finals at state swim meet

CANTON - Ada junior Klava Katayama finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle and seventh in the 100 butterfly preliminaries to make it to the finals of both events at the 43nd annual Ohio Div. II girls state swim meet at Canton's C.T. Branin Natatorium Thursday evening.
Katayama finished fifth out of of 24 swimmers with a time of 23.86 in the 50-yard free preliminary heats, which garnered her a qualifying spot in the A finals Friday evening.
Sophomore Nyah Funderburke of Columbus School for Girls won the 50 free preliminary heats in 23.55.
Katayama also took seventh among a field of 24 in the 100-yard butterfly semifinal prelims in 57.31. Junior Jordan Aurnou-Rhees of Columbus School for Girls won the fly prelims in 55.87.
The top eight finishers from the preliminary heats qualify for the A finals Friday night, while finishers 9-16 make it to the B finals.
The 17-18 finishers are provisional qualifiers who can move up into the B finals in case of an injury or illness to those who finished ahead of them.
Div. II finals swimming races begin at 5 p.m. Friday evening.
