Ada elementary principal, Ben Thaxton, says his favorite ice cream sundae is a banana split.
Too bad elementary students didn’t know that on Friday morning. They’d have somehow fit bananas into their “turn Mr. Thaxton into a sundae,” project.
This all came about when elementary math students raised funds for St. Jude’s Math-A-Thon. The students topped their goal of raising $5,000 by reaching $6,127.76. Fund were raised as students received pledges to work on math problems.
And, Mr. Thaxton promised to be turned into a sundae if the $5,000 goal was met.
Cindy Boehm, second grade teacher, and Gwen Jochims, intervention specialist, spearheaded the project, which is in its 25th-plus year at Ada. In fact, Ada elementary math students have raised approximately $125,000 for St. Jude’s since starting the program.
This year 94 elementary students participated in the math-pledge drive, which started in February and ended in March.
Sixteen lucky students were picked on a drawing. Those student chose which topping they intended to use on the principal.
Their choices included ice cream, syrup, sprinkles, ready whip, topped off with cherries.
For the record, in previous St. Jude Math-A-Thon's, the principal has been "pied" duct taped to a wall and was required to dress as a T Rex for one school day.
