3 ‘Bears have NCAA DIII bids
Three Ohio Northern student-athletes have received qualifying bids to the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships to be held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio from Thursday, May 23 to Saturday, May 25.
Senior All-American Ian McVey (Stow/Munroe Falls) will represent the men's track and field program. Meanwhile, senior Avery Ewing (Kokomo, Ind./Eastern) and junior All-American Maggie Krause (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) will represent the women's track and field team.
McVey will make his third appearance at an NCAA Division III track championship, his first during the outdoor season. He is slated to compete in the 20-man, 5,000-meter run field at 3:25 p.m. on Saturday.
He enters the championship meet with the 10th-fastest time in the country after establishing a career-best 14:24.24 effort at the Dr. Keeler Invitational at North Central (Ill.) last Thursday.
McVey is a two-time All-American in the event after finishing fifth in the 2018 indoor season and seventh during the 2019 indoor campaign. The senior is also a two-time All-American in cross country, having ended 10th in the 2017 national championships and fifth last fall.
Ewing will represent ONU in the women's 800-meter run after claiming the 21st seed in the 22-person field with a career-best 2:13.47 clocking. Her preliminary round race is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon with the finals slated for 1:50 p.m. on Saturday.
She will be making her second consecutive appearance at the outdoor national championships and her fourth overall championship in either the indoor or outdoor season. During her career, Ewing has competed on the 4x400-meter relay squad twice and qualified individually in the indoor 800-meter run during the 2019 campaign, ending 12th in the field.
Ewing and Krause were also part of the 2018 indoor track and field team who claimed third-place at the national championship meet, the program's highest finish in school history.
Krause returns to the national stage as a two-time All-American from the 2018 outdoor and 2019 indoor campaigns. She will compete at 12 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
The four-time national qualifier enters the meet with the seventh-best effort in the NCAA Division III this season at 3.88 meters (12' 8.75").
Krause finished tied for eighth in last year's outdoor championship and ended seventh in the 2019 indoor national championships for her two All-America honors. She also ended in a tie for 12th during the 2018 indoor season.
