Two Ada hometown student-athletes takes Intercollegiate Tennis honor
Two Ada hometown student-athletes, Mackenzie Wills and Zach Beaschler, were named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Teams and Scholar Athletes for the 2018-19 season.
Ohio Northern not only had four student-athletes honored but also garnered an All-Academic Team distinction, as well.
Scholar Athlete are named for being a varsity letter winner, earning a GPA of 3.5 or higher for the current academic year and having been enrolled at their collegiate institution for at least two semesters.
Mackenzie Wills
ONU’s Kayleigh Cummins was also named to women’s team.
Wills logged a team-best 24-3 record in singles matches, going 21-1 in duals and 7-0 in the OAC. She also recorded a 26-6 mark in doubles, going 23-3 in duals and 6-2 in the OAC.
Cummins held a 4-8 record in singles action while going 6-9 in doubles.
In April, Wills, a standout player at both Ada HS and ONU, was awarded Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week kudos for the first time in her Ohio Northern career.
The week she won that honor Wills posted a perfect 10-0 overall record, leading the Polar Bears to an undefeated 5-0 mark against Baldwin Wallace, Franciscan, Muskingum, Marietta, and Earlham (Ind.). The junior went 5-0 in singles play in the No. 2-5 roles and 5-0 in doubles action in the No. 1-3 slots.
The Polar Bears open the season at Defiance Sept. 4.
Zach Beaschler
Freshmen Zach Beaschler and Andrew Cochran along with sophomores Joji Imatomi and Joshua McClure reeled in Scholar Athlete recognition.
Beaschler went 13-11 in singles but was more effective in doubles matches, racking up a 16-7 record.
Cochran competed in a team-high 26 matches and boasted a singles record of 17-9 while going 12-9 in doubles action. Imatomi only competed in six singles matches but won them all to go alongside his 3-0 record in doubles action. McClure won all three of his singles matches and did not play as part of a doubles team.
The Polar Bears open the 2019-20 season Sept. 21 at the Oberlin Invitational.
