Polar Bear wrestlers 6th at Whitehill duals
The Ohio Northern wrestling team advanced finished sixth at the 16-team Lycoming (Pa.) Budd Whitehill National Duals at Lamande Gymnasium.
The Polar Bears (11-6 overall) finished with a 3-2 record.
Ohio Northern competed in the "5th-8th Place" bracket on Saturday, defeating Cortland State (N.Y.) 20-19 and falling to Springfield (Mass.) 19-16.
Against Cortland State Trailing 4-0 after the 125 bout, ONU won the next five matches to grab a 20-4 lead.
The Red Dragons (5-2) won the final four bouts, but even with a pin at heavyweight, could not overcome the Polar Bears' early lead.
Against Castleton, the Polar Bears won the first five weight classes to build a 20-0 lead, then held on as the Spartans (6-3) won the final five bouts.
No. 23-ranked senior Seth Transue (Plain City/Jerome) and senior Jeff Andrews (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) each won by 16-0 tech falls to make it 10-4.
Freshman Chase Sumner (Ada) won 11-2 at 149 and sophomore Shaun Wagner (Southington, Conn.) got a decision at 157 to extend the lead to 17-4.
Sophomore Jordan Hardrick (Huber Heights/Wayne) got a third period takedown and the riding time point to win 6-5 at 165 to put the Polar Bears up 20-4.
In the fifth place match against the Pride (8-1), Transue, Sumner and Wagner all won to put ONU ahead 13-6.
Sophomore Connor Kwiat (Bloomville/Tiffin Calvert) won 5-1 at 174 to give Northern a 16-9 advantage.
But SC would win the last three weight classes to rally for the 19-16 win.
ONU finished second in Pool D with a 2-1 record on Friday, defeating No. 23-ranked Castleton (Vt.) 20-19, Wilkes (Pa.) 24-14 and falling to No. 25 Washington & Lee (Va.) 24-20.
