Mackenzie Wills one win from tying ONU career singles record
Ada High School graduate Mackenzie Wills experienced a record-setting spring break as a member of the ONU women’s tennis team.
With two singles victories on March 4, Wills moved within one of tying the ONU career record with 82 singles wins. She is 82-18 in her career, just trailing the 83 wins by Meghan Letizia from 2012-16.
The Ohio Northern women's tennis team ran its winning streak to seven matches with an 8-1 victory over Alvernia (Pa.) and a 9-0 win over St. Vincent (Pa.) March 4 at the USTA National Campus.
ONU (12-3 overall) finished its spring break trip with a 7-1 record, winning its final seven matches on the trip.
Freshman Regan Landis (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) and senior Mackenzie Wills (Ada) and led a quartet of ONU players with 4-0 records on the day.
Landis was 2-0 at No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles, and Wills was 2-0 at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles.
Senior Katie Curry (Oxford/Talawanda) and freshman Jeorgia Templin (Fisher, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) were also 4-0.
Curry was 2-0 at No. 4 singles and went 2-0 at No. 3 doubles with Landis, while Templin was 2-0 at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles with Wills.
Senior Jordan Dodson (Worthington) was 2-0 at No. 6 singles.
Senior Kaleigh Cummins (SpringfieldNortheastern) was 1-1 at No. 1 singles and went 2-0 at No. 1 doubles with freshman Florine Sanchez (West Chester/Lakota West)
March 2 matches
On March 2 against Houghton (N.Y.) ONU won 9-0 via forfeit and beat Regis (Mass.) 9-0.
Senior Kaleigh Cummins (Springfield/Northeastern), sophomore Olivia Schrager (Dayton/Miami Valley), freshman Regan Landis (Elkhart, Ind./Concord), senior Mackenzie Wills (Ada), senior Katie Curry(Oxford/Talawanda) and freshman Jeorgia Templin (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) all won singles matches. Schrager and Cummins, Wills and Templin and Curry and Landis logged the doubles wins for ONU.
ONU also had a 5-2 win over Midway (Ky.) and a 6-3 win over Concordia (Minn.).
The Polar Bears began the day with the 5-2 win over the Eagles (4-6) at the Lake Cane Tennis Center.
ONU then topped the Cobbers (2-7) at Oak Street Park in Kissimmee on Tuesday evening.
Senior Mackenzie Wills (Ada) and freshman Jeorgia Templin (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) each went 4-0 on the day to lead Ohio Northern.
Wills won at Nos. 3 and 4 singles and Templin won at Nos. 5 and 6 singles. The duo then went 2-0 at No. 2 doubles.
Senior Katie Curry (Oxford/Talawanda) was 3-0 on the day with wins at Nos. 4 and 5 singles and No. 3 doubles with freshman Regan Landis (Elkhart, Ind./Concord).
