Ada American Legion reviews past year
Tom Lehman, first vice commander, provided the Icon with the following update of the Ada American Legion Post 185.
Ada American Legion Post 185 is still active. Although the post has only met once since the Covid 19 outbreak they are still trying to carry on as well as possible. The Post meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the VFW Hall north of Ada.
Last fall, the Post gave the Americanism and Government test at three local schools, Ada, Hardin Northern, and Upper Scioto Valley. The top scoring boy and girl from the 10th, 11th, and 12th grade from all combined schools were awarded a certificate and a pin and those test were passed on to the county commander and then the district commander.
The test consisted of 50 multiple choice answers and one essay question. The top scoring 12th graders were Jordan Burton from Hardin Northern and Liberty Lawrence from Upper Scioto Valley. Top scoring 11th graders were Jacob Morgan and Brenna Hissong, both from Ada. Top scoring 10th graders were Jake Bushong and Emma Wilcox, both from Upper Scioto Valley.
In the late winter and early spring the Ada Post along with the Kenton Post selected candidates for Buckeye Boys State and Buckeye Girls State. Sadly, because of Covid, both programs were cancelled.
Buckeye Girls State candidates were to be Barrett Jones, Aleece Al-Olimat, Leona Dalton, Rylie Roser, all from Ada, Allison Moore, Upper Scioto Valley, and Mara Ruhlen from Hardin Northern. Buckeye Boys State candidates were to be Jacob Morgan, Ada, Lance Good, Hardin Northern, and Collin Dyer, Upper Scioto Valley.
The Legion, with the help of the local Boy Scouts, also places the veterans’ flags at Woodlawn Cemetery for Memorial Day. They also participate in the Memorial Day Service and place flags at six other area cemeteries.
The Post plans to restart meeting as soon as possible. Persons interested in joining can send an email to [email protected] To be eligible for the American Legion a person needs to have served in a federal military branch and be active duty or honorably discharged anytime between Dec. 7, 1941 to the present.
