Ada's latest news

The Icon stopped in at the ONU College of Business last week and observed that the Polar Bear in the main lobby gets its fix of news 24 hours a day. If you need any up-to-the-minute news summary, just ask the business bear.

Austin Allemeier, senior on men's basketball team

Austin Allemeier simply couldn't earn a stop.

During a defensive drill at Indiana Tech, Allemeier, a true freshman at the time, was tasked with holding teammate Edmond Early Jr. scoreless. If Allemeier were to fail in this endeavor, the drill would continue — Allemeier versus Early.

"He would kill me every single day," Allemeier said.

After an understandably frustrating day where Allemeier couldn't get the stop he needed, an internal switch was flipped. Allemeier knew he needed to improve as a defender if he was ever going to survive in the waters of collegiate basketball.

One of the lasting impressions from the Joe Banks Invitational Saturday will be what Ohio Northern's distance runners did in the 5,000-meter run inside the ONU Sports Center. The Polar Bears boasted four of the top five runners, as sophomore Tessa Pitcovich (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) won the race after logging a time of 18:28.47.

Fellow sophomore Rue Whitmore (Mason) placed runner-up, clocking in at 18:42.47, while juniors Megan Wright(Eaton/Twin Valley South) and Kathleen Colvin (Hilliard/Bishop Ready) took third and fifth, respectively, with times of 18:52.91 and 19:04.83. The distance runners helped ONU rally for a third place team finish.

ONU/Ada is a better place because the Freeds left their mark

Dr. DeBow Freed died on Feb. 8, 2020. For his obituary click here.

How would Dr. DeBow and his late wife Catherine (Kitty) Freed like to be remembered?

They lived by the mantra “Students come first.” While at Ohio Northern, the couple worked tirelessly, always putting students first because educating students is the whole purpose of the institution. The faculty, staff, buildings, equipment, landscaping, and all else were to benefit students. That was the institution’s singular goal during his tenure as president.
