Hornet girls stave off Ada
By Cort Reynolds
RAWSON - The visiting Ada girls basketball team rallied late but came up short at local foe Cory-Rawson 59-51 in a non-league contest Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Bulldogs fell behind 12-5 after the first period and trailed 31-21 at intermission.
Aided by early purple and gold turnovers, C-R extended its lead to 46-32 after three quarters.
Ada rallied to outscore the Hornets 19-11 in the final stanza as sophomore playmaker Courtney Sumner poured in 12 of her season-high 23 points.
The Bulldog girls record dropped to 3-9 overall with the defeat. Meanwhile, the Lady Hornets improved to 9-5 after the victory.
"If we had made layups and not turned the ball over we would have won," claimed third-year Ada head coach Morgan Bass. "We started off the third quarter with three turnovers in a row, which killed us.
"Courtney did a lot for us," she added. "We looked great at times breaking the press and making all the right passes. We just didn't finish."
Cory senior Zoe Chisholm netted 15 of her 21 points in the middle periods. Makayla Gilfillan contributed 12 of her 17 markers in the second and third quarters as the duo combined to net 27 of the 34 C-R points.
Senior Miranda Wills and freshman guard Olivia Burkhart each tallied nine points for Ada.
The Lady Bulldogs sank 15 field goals, hitting a dozen two-pointers and three shots from three-point territory. The Bulldogs converted 18 of 26 foul shots (69 percent).
For the second game in a row, Ada set season highs in free throws made and attempted.
The Hornet girls canned 24 field goals. C-R drilled 22 two-pointers and knocked down a pair of treys, both by Chisholm. The hosts converted nine of 18 free throw attempts (50 percent).
Ada is now 2-5 on the road.
