ONU men's spring sports update
Here’s an update on ONU men’s spring sports.
Lacrosse
Senior Cameron Marous (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) scored a goal and added three assists to lead the Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team in a 10-7 Ohio Athletic Conference loss to Baldwin Wallace on Saturday afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears fall to 3-2 overall and are 2-1 in OAC action, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 5-0, 3-0.
Northern scored four consecutive goals to grab a 4-2 lead with 13:07 left in the first half.
Senior Pat Berthelsen-Leon (Bethpage, N.Y.) scored 2:27 into the second half to break a 5-5 halftime tie and give ONU a 6-5 advantage.
BW would score three straight goals and lead 8-6 entering the fourth period.
Marous made it 8-6 with a goal at the 603 mark, but BW answered with a goal just 18 seconds later to extend the lead back to two.
Baldwin Wallace iced the game with another goal with 3:16 left in the game.
Ohio Northern out-shot Baldwin Wallace 43-27, had a 29-26 advantage in ground balls and won 15-of-21 faceoffs.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Saturday at home against John Carroll.
Men’s soccer
Junior Levi King (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) scored two goals and junior Seth Gundlach(Wilmington) had a goal and two assists to lead the Ohio Northern men's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Muskingum on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 1-1-1 overall and are 1-1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Muskies fall to 0-3-0, 0-3-0.
King and senior Zach Yoder (Goshen, Ind./Northridge) scored 12 seconds apart in the 29th minute as Northern led 2-0 at intermission.
King scored 1:48 into the second half to put ONU up 3-0 and Gundlach and junior Bryan Kern (Rocky River) scored 1:32 apart to give the hosts a 5-0 lead with 54:47 gone in the contest.
Ohio Northern out-shot Muskigum 21-5.
Sophomore Josh Ellis (Whitehouse/Anthony Wayne) had a four-save shutout in his first career start.
Baseball
The Ohio Northern baseball team opened the Ohio Athletic Conference portion of its 2021 schedule with a pair of losses to No. 15 Marietta on Saturday afternoon at Wander Field.
The Polar Bears fall to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the OAC, while the Pioneers improve to 6-0, 2-0.
MC won the opener 13-1 and took the nightcap 10-1.
Junior Andy Mills (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) went 4-for-7 with an RBI from his leadoff position to lead the Ohio Northern offense.
In Game 1, MC scored in five of the first six innings to build a 12-1 lead.
Sophomore Nate Webb (Liberty, Ind./Union County) drilled his first career home run to account for ONU's run.
MC scored three times in the third and fifth frames to take a 6-0 lead in game two.
Mills had an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to score sophomore Jacob Wenning (Coldwater) to get ONU on the board.
Marietta would put the game away with single runs in each of the final four innings.
Track and field
The Ohio Northern men's track and field team opened its 2021 outdoor schedule on Sunday at the Marietta OAC Opener meet at Don Drumm Stadium.
The Polar Bears (6-3 overall) finished fourth of 10 teams with 73 points.
Senior Jack Lehr (York, Pa./Dallastown) finished second in the discus with a heave of 38.65 meters to lead ONU.
Freshman Gabe Hensley (Lebanon) was third in the triple jump at 12.25 meters and was fourth in the long jump at 5.98 meters.
Senior Alex Sube (Wadsworth/Highland) was third in the hammer throw with a toss of 47.94 meters.
Sophomore Brandt Marshall (Bluffton/Cory-Rawson) was third in the pole vault by clearing 4.13 meters.
Freshman Jared Swartz (Columbua Station/Columbiana) was third in the 5,000-meter run in 15:47.30.
Senior Owen Lloyd (Colfax, Ind./Clinton Prairie) was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in :15.79.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Saturday at Otterbein.
