Polar Bears advance to OAC semifinals
Sophomore Landen Long (Mason) scored a career-high 25 points to lead Ohio Northern to an 80-79 victory at John Carroll in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night at the DeCarlo Center.
The fifth-seeded Polar Bears (4-6 overall) advance to the semifinals and will host sixth-seeded Muskingum on Thursday night at the ONU Cports Center.
The fourth-seeded Blue Streaks end their season at 4-4.
Sophomore Adam Scott (Wapakoneta) added a career-high 16 points and sophomore Grant Heileman (Millersport/Sheridan) tied a career-high with 15 points for Ohio Northern.
Heileman converted a 3-point play with 3:05 left in the game to give ONU a 78-77 lead and junior Brandon Waugh (Columbus/Northland) converted a pair of free throws with 21.1 ticks left to give ONU an 80-77 advantage.
JCU scored with 7.2 seconds left to get within 80-79.
Waugh missed the front end of a one-and-one with 6.2 seconds left, but the Polar Bear defense forced JCU into a tough shot just ahead of the buzzer to hang on for the victory.
