Ada netters whip Spartans
By Cort Reynolds
LIMA - The visiting Ada tennis team soundly defeated Lima Senior 4-1 indoors at the Westwood Tennis and Fitness Club Wednesday evening.
Unseasonable snow and cold forced the match to be moved from Lima Senior to Westwood.
The purple and gold netters improved to 4-5 with the convincing win over the Div. I Spartans.
All four Bulldog victories came in straight sets. Ada won 48 games to just 13 by LS in those four match wins.
Bulldog senior Miranda Wills improved to 5-4 this season at first singles with a straight-sets win over Spartan sophomore Keegan Halliday.
"Keegan was a very solid defensive player with good range," said Bulldog head coach Dexter Woods. "The match was long and close, but Miranda won most of the key points on her way to a two-set victory."
Ada junior southpaw Dexter Woods III increased his mark this spring to 8-1 with a near shutout of senior Ryan Vlendorf.
"Ryan had an interesting style and returned numerous balls in numerous ways, but Dexter stayed focused on his own game and played well," said his father/coach.
Bulldog junior Brendan Jameson won his second straight match handily at third singles over sophomore Nick Harrel. "Brendan continued to work on component parts of his game, including his serve and his approach shots," said Woods.
At second doubles, Ada sophomores Amelia Alexander and Geddes Klingler combined as a new tandem to defeat Spartan juniors Gage Hipsher and Ricky Lee 6-4, 6-2 for their first win.
"After coming back to win an early game in which they were down love-40, the team's confidence and momentum continued to grow for the rest of the match, culminating in a love game to win their match," said Woods.
Seniors Cole Anspaugh and Colton Biederman were defeated by LS seniors Michael Bishop and Noah Phillips 6-1, 6-4.
"By the second set, they were serving consistently and dividing the court coverage well," Woods noted of the Ada duo.
"The doubles teams featured two new combinations of partners with seniors Cole Anspaugh and Colton Beiderman pairing up at first doubles and Amelia Alexander and Geddes Klingler pairing up at second doubles," said Woods.
"Both teams played well and improved throughout their respective matches."
