Toby Smith will continue to teach at Lima Senior the rest of this school year, then will teach and coach at Ada in the 2021-22 school year. He plans to implement workouts for the Ada program starting in mid-January

ADA - The Ada school board hired successful and experienced gridiron mentor Toby Smith as its new head varsity football coach last Thursday night at their regular December meeting.

"We are very happy to have a coach with a successful track record like his joining us," said Ada athletic director Eric Perkins.

"We think he will have a very positive impact on our student-athletes," he added.

A native of Connecticut, Smith is a 1993 graduate of Wittenberg University, where he received a bachelor's degree in health and physical education. 

Varsity nipped in OT; JV wins a wild double overtime contest

ADA - The host Ada boys basketball team lost a 38-36 overtime heartbreaker to local foe Cory-Rawson in non-league play Saturday night.

The Bulldogs led most of the game after holding the ice-cold Hornets without a field goal for the first 11:13 of the contest.

But C-R hung within striking distance, then put together a 13-0 second-half run to rally from a six-point deficit into a 27-20 lead. 

Ada battled back to tie it 31-31 on back-to-back treys from seniors Trent Ennis and Tristan Conley with 2:22 left in regulation. 

Ada swimmers take on Bluffton

LIMA - The Bluffton swim club and Ada varsity team faced off in the Bulldog season-opening dual meet Thursday evening at the Lima YMCA natatorium.

Bluffton captured the girls meet 48-31, and also won the boys meet by a 67-12 score.

Sophomore Carlie Oldfield and senior Paige Cole each won two races to pace the Ada girls. Sophomores Kaitlyn Bowden and Jack Baumgartner also recorded first-place finishes for the Bulldogs.

Sophomore Riley Verb won two individual events for Bluffton and also swam a leg for two relay race winners.

James A. “Jim” Griffith, age 72, passed away at his residence in Lakeview on Friday, Dec. 18, 2020.

He was born on Jan. 30, 1948, in Bluffton, Ohio, to the late Robert and Vesta (Miller) Griffith. 

James retired from Proctor & Gamble of Lima, where he worked as a product manager.  James was a U. S. Navy Veteran. He served in the Mediterranean as a Crew Chief on the Aircraft Carrier the John F. Kennedy.  He was a member of the Elks and Moose Lodge of Lakeview.

He is survived by his two sisters: Mary Bea Agin of Ada and Bobbie (Lee) Hansel of Livingston, N.J.

It was James’ wish to be cremated. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
