Two special programs open to the public are on the Ada Public Library calendar this week.
The History of Warfare
The first of a multi-part series on The History of Warfare, presented by John Lomax, retired professor of history at Ohio Northern University, takes place Wednesday.
The initial program is from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 13, which centers on “Germanic tribal warfare.” The series continues with programs at the same time on the following Wednesdays:
• Feb. 27 – Chivalric warfare
• March 6 – Gunpowder revolution
• March 13 – Industrial total warfare
• March 20 – Asymetric warfare
Mark Badertscher of the Hardin County extension office calls it the largest conference of its kind in the Midwest.
It's happening in Ada on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 5-6, as the annual tillage and conservation conference comes to Ohio Northern University. During the conference, figuratively speaking, ONU changes its name to Corn University.
Badertscher expects 800 to 900 persons in attendance.
The conference will feature about 75 speakers on a wide range of topics. Here are a few highlights.
• Bob Nielsen, Purdue University, returns and speaks about on-farm research.
Melissa Eddings Mancuso and daughters, Bella and Carmen, view the exhibit of art work by Ada High School artists on display this month in the front area of the Ada Public Library. The exhibit includes work by nearly 20 artists. In the children's section is an exhibit of elementary art.
The Ada-Liberty Joint Ambulance District board will meet Monday, Feb. 18, at 5:30 p.m., at 530 N. Gilbert St., according to Nancy L. Kindle, fiscal officer/clerk.
Both ONU basketball teams lost on Saturday. Here are reports of those contests, with the women’s game first, followed by the men’s game.
The Ohio Northern women's basketball program dropped a nail-biting, 56-54 Ohio Athletic Conference contest to the first-place John Carroll Blue Streaks Saturday afternoon inside the ONU Sports Center.
With the loss, Ohio Northern moves to 11-12 overall this season and 5-11 against the conference loop. Meanwhile, the Blue Streaks improve to 17-6 overall and to 13-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
Jon Cross, Ohio House Representative from the 83rd district, has been appointed to the following standing committees and subcommittee:

Financial Institutions
Public Utilities
In addition, Speaker Householder appointed Rep. Cross to serve on a screening committee to interview candidates seeking an appointment to fill an open seat for the 3rd Ohio House district.
