ONU Freshman Jacob Reed (Canal Winchester/Lancaster) earned All-America honors with a third place finish at the 141-pound weight class at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships on Friday and Saturday at the Alliant Engergy Power House in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Reed (43-5) finished 5-1 in the Championships and went 3-0 in the Saturday morning session.

He becomes ONU's 19th All-American and is only the second freshman to earn the honor for the Polar Bears.

His third place finish is the best in school history by a freshman, surpassing the fourth place finish by two-time national champion Kyle Kwiat in 2010.

Reed started his Saturday morning with a 5-1 decision over Josiah Gehr of Messiah (Pa) in the consolation quarterfinals and then defeated Brandon Woody of Averett (Va.) 6-3 in the consolation semifinals.

He defeated Kyle Slendorn of Stevens (N.J.) 4-1 in the third place match to wrap up a terrific tournament.

Reed began the meet with a 3-0 win over No. 8 seed Joseph Rossetti of Williams (Mass.) 3-0 on Friday morning. He then fell to top-seeded Jordin James of Mount Union by a tight 3-2 count in the quarterfinals on Friday night.

He then topped No. 7 seed Sam Stuhl of Augsburg (Minn.) in the consolation second round to clinch an All-America finish.

Senior Schuyler Caprella (Bluffton/Allen East) and junior Chase Sumner (Ada) each finished with 1-2 records on Friday and were one victory shy of a top-8 finish and All-America honors that goes with it.

Caprella (36-14) ends his career with an impressive record of 115-67.

Sumner was seeded eighth at 149 pounds and ended his season with a 17-6 record. He will enter his senior campaign with a mark of 58-12.
