Bulldog baseball nipped by P-G

By Cort Reynolds

The Ada High School baseball team lost a taut 2-1 pitcher’s duel to visiting Pandora-Gilboa in a non-league game Saturday, May 13, at War Memorial Park.

The Bulldogs fell to 8-14 with the defeat that ended a four-game win streak.

P-G improved to 6-17 with the win.

Ada led 1-0 after the first inning, but single runs in each of the fifth and sixth frames lifted the Rockets to the comeback win.

“We only had two hits,” said Bulldog first-year head coach Toby Smith. “That will not be enough to win, typically. Today was no different.

“We pitched and played defense well enough to win, but you have to hit as well,” he noted.

Ada’s Max Puerto walked to lead off the home half of the first, and scored on two passed balls to tally the first run of the game.

But the Bulldogs would not record a hit until the sixth inning. Rocket starting pitcher Camden Teman and reliever Colin Harris retired 16 of the next 17 Ada batters after issuing the Puerto walk in the first inning.

Bulldog senior hurler Levi Sousley pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the second inning by inducing a couple of infield pop-outs.

Sousley retired 10 Rockets in a row until a two-out walk in the top of the fifth. Isaac Stall then delivered an RBI double to tie the game, 1-1. Sousley maintained the tie by getting the final out of the inning on a grounder to second base.

The only Bulldog who reached base again until the bottom of the sixth inning was Sousley, who walked and stole second base in the third.

In the top of the sixth inning, Harris stroked a leadoff single. He stole second and third base, and Teman singled him home with the tie-breaking run.

Ada reliever Mason Wibley was able to record the last two outs to avoid further damage and keep the margin at 2-1.

Senior Jacob Sutherly singled off Harris for the first Ada hit with one out in the bottom of the sixth. But after getting two strikeouts early in the inning, Teman ended the threat by inducing a fly-out to center field.

In the top of the seventh, P-G threatened against new Ada relief pitcher Spencer Wall. Isaac Stall slapped a two-out single and stole second base to reach scoring position.

Lane Lee walked, but Stall was thrown out trying to steal to end the inning.

Ada senior Roman Snyder led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single.

But with the tying run on first with none out, Harris wriggled out of trouble. First, he induced a fly-out to left field. Harris then struck out the last two Bulldogs to strand Snyder at first base and end the game.

P-G out-hit Ada, 5-2. The Bulldogs committed the game’s only error. The Rockets left six runners on base compared to three by Ada.

Harris earned the win with 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief. He allowed two hits and struck out five.

Sousley struck out one and allowed just two hits and one earned run in five innings as the Bulldog starter.

Ada hosts local non-league rival Cory-Rawson (2-17) in the Div. IV sectional semifinals Tuesday, May 16.

The Bulldogs beat C-R in their March 30 home opener 4-1 after scoring all four runs in the first inning.

“We will focus on the all the little things in order to get ready for Tuesday,” said Smith.
