James F. Elwood was a farmer and worked for Whirlpool
James F. Elwood, age 89, of Dunkirk, passed away on Thursday, November 16, 2023 at 8:15 p.m. at Birchaven Village, Findlay.
He was born on May 17, 1934, in Ada, Ohio to the late Wilbur and Ethel (Kimble) Elwood. On June 10, 1956 Jim married Doris (Hiller) and she survives.
Jim graduated from Dola High School in 1952 and was drafted into the U.S. Army in July 1956. He served at the U.S. Army Arctic Test Center Ft. Churchill in Manitoba, Canada. He was a lifelong farmer and retired from Whirlpool in 1996 after working twenty-five years. Jim was a lifelong member of the Hardin County Collectors and Restorers Club, Tri-State Gas Engine Association and the Northwest Ohio Antique Machinery Association. His hobbies included: collecting and restoring gas engines, especially John Deere, attending tractor and gas engine shows always with Doris, working in the woods, cutting firewood and “fixin a fire” in the stove.
He is also survived by his children: Michael (Missy Sanders) Elwood, Mary and Bill Hohler, Robert and Jobie Elwood and Jane and George Fletcher; grandchildren: Lindie Hohler, Brad (Molly Nagy) Hohler, Maggie (Will) Dory and Shelby (Alex) Ervin; three great grandchildren: Quinn, Josie and Lily; his sister, Hazel Rodabaugh; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers: John Elwood, Donald Elwood, Russell Elwood and Lloyd Elwood; two sisters: Marvel Wilkins and Ruth Isabelle Kohli; a grandchild and a great grandchild.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, November 24, 2023 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at Hanson-Neely-Allison Funeral & Cremation Services, Ada. A private family burial will take place at a later date in Dola Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hardin Northern Community Center, 8534 State Route 68, Kenton, Ohio 43326.
