ONU Men's Soccer falls 4-1 at No. 15 Denison
GRANVILLE — The No. 19-ranked Ohio Northern men's soccer team fell 4-1 at No. 15-ranked Denison in the Second Round of the NCAA III Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
The Basics
Records: #19 Ohio Northern (14-4-4 overall), #15 Denison (14-1-6 Overall).
Venue: Barclay-Thomsen Field — Granville, Ohio.
The Match
Denison scored just 2:10 into the match to take a quick 1-0 lead.
Fifth-year senior Cade Winchester (Knoxville, Tenn./Alcoa) answered with an unassisted goal in the ninth minute to tie the game up.
The Big Red scored in the 20th minute and again 38th minute to take a 3-1 lead at halftime.
Denison scored their last goal in the 60th minute to go up 4-1.
Senior Goalkeeper Lucas Hickey (Conroe, Tex./Oak Ridge) had one save in goal for ONU.
ONU out-shot DU 23-13 and had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Notables
Ohio Northern is making its 11th NCAA Tournament appearance and third in the last three seasons.
The Polar Bears are 12-10-4 all-time in NCAA Tournament play, including a 4-2-1 record in Second Round matches.
Denison leads the all-time series between the two teams by an 9-0-1 margin.
The Polar Bears posted their 19th consecutive winning season this year.
Senior Ryan Sommerfeld (Dublin/Coffman) leads the team this season with 25 points, nine goals and seven assists.
Winchester and Fifth-year senior Will Shaffer (Galena/St. Francis DeSales) are right behind with seven goals each.
This is the 50th season of Ohio Northern men's soccer. The Polar Bears are now 541-299-79 all-time in program history.
Sixth-year head coach Chris Matejka is now 70-31-20 at Ohio Northern.
