ODW field reports for Northwest Ohio
State Wildlife Officer Levi Farley, assigned to Paulding County, observed an angler throwing a cast net along the Auglaize River. The individual caught a crappie with the cast net and harvested the fish. Officer Farley contacted the individual and issued a misdemeanor summons for possessing a sport fish by means other than angling. The suspect paid $150 in fines and court costs.
State Wildlife Officer Eric VonAlmen, assigned to Wood County, received a call from a contractor that found a white-tailed deer trapped in the open basement of a house that was under construction. Officer VonAlmen and State Wildlife Officer Matt R. Smith, assigned to Henry County, responded. Officer VonAlmen safely captured the deer, but when Officer Smith released the deer, it jumped back into the basement. Officer VonAlmen again caught the deer and Officer Smith released it farther from the construction site. The deer ran off without any apparent injuries.
