Waters to perform at LSO Storytime
Lima Public Library, January 18 at 10:30 a.m.
Musicians: Dr. Sarah Waters, percussion; Lydia Butterfield, erhu; Maestro Andrew Crust, leading the educational program
This program will introduce instruments found in the traditional Peking Opera Orchestra, a form of opera originating in Beijing, China. This include several percussion instruments and the bowed stringed instrument called the erhu. Kids will be able to learn how to play these instruments at the program as well!
Dr. Sarah Waters has traveled extensively to China to study their music. She has worked directly with the principal percussionist and conductor of the Beijing Peking Opera Orchestra and other esteemed musicians from China. She has also received a Fulbright scholarship to study music abroad, passing down her knowledge to her students at ONU.
One of her former students, Lydia, has studied Chinese music with her as well as traveled with Dr. Waters to China in 2019. In her time in her undergrad, Lydia focused her studies on Chinese stringed instruments including the erhu and sanxian with musicians from the Beijing Peking Opera Orchestra and pipa with Yang Wei, a musician with the Silk Road Ensemble founded by famous cellist, Yo Yo Ma.
