Letter: Ask for veto of HB 96 library provision
From https://www.blufftonicon.com/news/letters
Dear Library Supporters,
Ohio public libraries are asking for your help again! Within the State Budget (HB 96) is a provision that would have a great impact on our services. This provision would require libraries to segregate materials related to gender identity, expression, and sexual orientation to guarantee they are not visible to anyone under 18 - ultimately undermining the right of parents and guardians to determine what their children access. Ohio Libraries have collection policies in place, ensuring that collections reflect the interest and needs of the community. Our library also provides cards with varying levels of access, which are approved by parents/guardians.
How will this impact the library?
Because the language of this provision is so vague and broad, it would mean moving items like “American Girl” books or “Farmer Boy” by Laura Ingalls Wilder from the view of minors. Our library is a one-floor collection, so the limited space we have in our building may mean going adult-only.
How can you help?
Reach out to Governor DeWine and ask him to veto this provision. Governor DeWine has been very supportive of Ohio Libraries and sharing your concerns will have an impact. Because of the timing of this bill, all contact needs to be made before Monday, June 30.
It’s our library, and our community.
With gratitude,
Jessica Hermiller
Director, Bluffton Public Library
