Unbeaten Bulldog softball clobbers Kalida

By Cort Reynolds

KALIDA__The visiting Ada High School softball team continued to run roughshod over its opponents with an 18-1 shellacking of non-conference foe Kalida on Saturday, April 11 to stay undefeated.

Ada senior right fielder Alainee Buxton enjoyed a career-day with a double, two singles, six runs batted in and a run scored.

The Bulldog girls scored early and often to invoke the 10-run mercy rule after five innings.

Ada improved to 10-0 overall with the decisive victory in their first road game. Kalida fell to 2-5 after the five-inning loss.

“Alainee Buxton had a good game,” said Bulldog head coach Jeff Bassitt. “All three pitchers did a nice job. Gabby (Fleming) did a nice job behind the plate.”

Ada broke on top immediately and was never threatened. Emily Shanks doubled while Sophie Fleming, Tea Griffith and Buxton each slapped RBI hits in the first inning to make it 5-0.

The Bulldogs plated five runs in the second inning on three hits. Freshman starting hurler Aubry Jordan and Buxton both delivered two-run singles to highlight the outburst.

In the Ada third, an RBI single by freshman Maycie Dewese extended the lead to 11-0.

The Bulldogs tallied seven runs on five hits in the fourth frame. Sophie Fleming singled in a run, and Summer Wibley singled home two more runs. An error allowed two more runs to scamper home.

Buxton then slugged a two-run double to cap her big day.

Sophomore leadoff batter Shanks smacked two doubles. Dewese collected two hits, one RBI and a run. Freshman Shay Smith singled in a run and scored two runs.

Aubry Jordan knocked in two runs, scored twice and had one hit. She started and pitched two innings of shutout ball to get the win.

Freshman Griffith hurled the next two frames, giving up one hit and one earned run. She struck out five and walked one. Dewese pitched the last inning and struck out the side in order.

Fleming and Wibley each had two RBI on singles, while Taliana Parker drove in two runs. Reese Jordan and Griffith each drew two walks.

Ada out-hit the Wildcats, 15-2. Pitcher Addie Brokamp started and took the loss for Kalida. Kate Foppe and Tanner Anspach singled to provide the only Wildcat hits.

The unbeaten Bulldogs have outscored their opposition 141-23 in 10 victories (14.1 runs per game to 2.3). Their first nine games were at home.

The Bulldog girls (2-0 BVC) host a showdown of unbeatens vs. defending league champion Elmwood (7-0, 3-0 BVC) Monday, April 13 at Ada.

The Royals beat a solid 6-3 Archbold club by a 4-2 count Saturday.
