Extension to original Kosovo Law Faculty Instructional Development Program grant

The Center for Democratic Governance and Rule of Law at Ohio Northern has been awarded an extension to the original Kosovo Law Faculty Instructional Development Program grant.

This U.S. State Department extension provides $428,660 to be used for scholarships for junior faculty from Kosovo law faculties to enroll in the LL.M. in Democratic Governance and Rule of Law and Legal Pedagogy Certificate programs for 2017-18.

The program is under the direction of Prof. Howard Fenton, director of the Center, and Prof. Brian Anderson,  assistant director of the LL.M. program.

A $36,000 Ohio Means Internships and Co-ops (OMIC) award from the Ohio Department of Higher Education supports ONU business and engineering students by covering costs related to the experiential activities allowing for more student participation.

This is the third time ONU has participated in the OMIC program. Matthew Lambdin, director of experiential leaning in the business college; Laurie Laird, director of corporate and alumni relations in the engineering college; and Dean Kales, KEEN industry liaison in the engineering college, are the ONU project directors on this award.

Cheryl “Cheri” L. Mason, a 1986 political science graduate at ONU, has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as chair of the Board of Veterans’ Appeals (BVA) within the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The appointment is a six-year term. She is the first woman and the first military spouse to serve as the chair of the BVA.

At Northern, she served an LBJ intern for U.S. Rep. Bob McEwen of Ohio. She earned the Juris Doctor degree from Creighton University, Omaha, Neb.

The West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church has awarded a $10,069 Undergraduate Collegiate Ministry Grant to support the Merge program and two new initiatives in Religious Life ministries on campus.

The new initiatives involve Worship Arts activities and the addition of a student staff member to oversee this work. The Rev. Dr. David MacDonald, university chaplain, is the project director for this grant.

ONU's nursing program delivers

Nurses have to be prepared for anything, and when it comes to making sure they’re ready, ONU’s nursing program delivers.

The 121-student program is known for its rigorous curriculum and high-impact learning opportunities. On top of classroom and lab work, every student is required to complete 840 clinical hours in a hospital setting throughout the four-year program. Students are put through intense training and are routinely pushed to their limits. It’s certainly not for the faint of heart.

Elizabeth Yaeger, a senior nursing major from Copley, Ohio, recalls her initial thoughts on the nursing program when she started as a freshman.

Juveniles are now abusing these dangerous drugs

Keith Durkin is a man on a mission. Durkin, professor of sociology at Ohio Northern University, has seen how drug use has ravaged the area during his seven years as a quality assurance specialist for the Hardin County Juvenile Court.

“The abuse of opioids is now at epidemic levels in the region, and juveniles are now abusing these dangerous drugs,” he said.

In response, Durkin has teamed up with Hardin County court official Wade Melton to develop a plan to combat this epidemic. Melton is director of programs for the Hardin County Court of Common Pleas, Juvenile Division. Their efforts were supported by an Ohio Department of Youth Services Competitive RECLAIM grant.
