The Ohio Northern University Department of Music presents the ONU Jazz Band on Thursday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts.
The ONU Jazz Band, under the direction of David Sycks, will take a stroll down memory lane as it explores “ONU Jazz Through the Years.” Sycks is the Bluffton High School band director.
The group will play a repertoire from the first days of ONU jazz in the 1960s up to the present, including works by Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Count Basie and Chick Corea. Everett Collier, the “golden voice” of jazz, will be the narrator for the evening.
Martin Sieff, noted Middle East correspondent, journalist and author, will speak on “Dangerous Ignorance: Why U.S. Policymakers Get the Middle East Wrong” in Ohio Northern University’s Dicke Forum on Tuesday, April 28, at 7 p.m.
The event, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the ONU Department of History, Politics, and Justice; the University Committee on the Arts and Special Events (CASE); and Phi Beta Delta.
Sieff’s lecture will focus on the perceived lies, myths and clichés perpetuated by the U.S. government and the media, and he will describe what is currently happening in the Middle East and what is expected in the future.
Ohio Northern University students Brett Wonders, a fourth-year pharmacy major from Defiance, and Dan Knapinski, a senior sport management major from Neenah, Wis., garnered second place in the Audio Production category of the Broadcast Education Association’s (BEA) Festival of Media Arts in the Student Two-Year/Small Colleges Competition at the Broadcast Education Association's 60th annual convention in Las Vegas from April 11-13.
The duo was recognized for their WONB-FM broadcast coverage of ONU’s 2014 football game against Muskingum.
The Ohio Northern University Department of Music presents the ONU Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts. Music Director Travis Jürgens will conduct the ONU Symphony Orchestra in the season finale, “A French Twist.”
Works include Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” (orchestrated by Ravel), Gershwin’s “An American in Paris,” Ravel’s “Pavane pour une infante défunte” and Milhaud’s Percussion Concerto, featuring Dr. Sarah Waters as soloist. Artwork related to “Pictures at an Exhibition” will be displayed on the monitors in the lobby.
Ohio Northern University Dicke College of Business Administration student Courtney Horstman, a senior accounting major from Delphos, Ohio, was awarded the 2015-16 Ritchie-Jennings Memorial Scholarship by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE).
The Ohio Northern University Child Development Center has received a five-star Step Up To Quality (SUTQ) Award from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Bureau of Child Care and Development, the state agency responsible for licensing and promoting high standards among Ohio’s early care and education programs.
ONU’s Child Development Center was recognized for its excellence and ongoing commitment to children.
