Safer Ohio tip line reminder

In accordance with the orders issued by the President of the United States of America and in remembrance of the 19 children and 2 teachers who were killed in a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, Governor DeWine has ordered that the flags of the United States and the State of Ohio be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout the State of Ohio until sunset on May 28, 2022.

The Safer Ohio program provides ways to report suspicious activity, request roadside help and real-time traffic.

A message from the Apollo Career Center Superintendent Keith Horner:

I recently read in GraphsandLaughs that there were 11.55 million job openings and 5.95 million unemployed people in March [2022]. This is very close to two jobs available for every job seeker, which is consistent with what we see in this region. Every sector that Apollo works with is experiencing workforce issues.

As a result of these issues, we have seen a couple of things happening. One, wages are increasing, even for high school students.  It is not unusual for our high school students to make $15 to $20 per hour.

In the May 17 Northwest Ohio-Wildlife District Two report from the Ohio Division of Wildlife, it was noted that State Wildlife Investigator Jeremy Payne, assigned to northwest Ohio, assisted with multiple pollution events in 2021, many of which were reported by a concerned citizen.

These reports allow officers to quickly arrive on the scene and work to determine the cause of the pollution. Ohioans are encouraged to call 1-800-WILDLIFE (1-800-945-3543) to report any dead or dying fish in their local streams.

JAMPD tips on abandoned, nesting and fledgling birds

From the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District (via Facebook):

"The phone calls to the Park Office are increasing every day. Let's have a quick clarification on abandoned, nestling and fledgling birds on this Wildlife Wednesday.

"Abandoned-baby birds (animals) are rare. Unless you physically see the deceased parents near the nest (or burrow or den) DO NOT DISTURB the baby animal. Your first impulse may be to help the young bird, but in the great majority of cases the young bird doesn’t need help.
