Here’s the Ohio Northern University sports round up from the past week.
Women’s swim team
The Ohio Northern women's swimming and diving team started off its dual meet season with a victory. The Polar Bears defeated Wilmington 138-122 Friday night.
The 200-meter medley relay team — of Shelby Starkey, Abby Schauer, Kyley Stuart and Gabrielle Grant — got things started, claiming first with a time of 2:11.90.
Schauer won the 100-meter breaststroke, as well, boasting a time of 1:20.21. Stuart touched first in the 100-meter butterfly, clocking in at 1:13.37, and Grant took first in the 50-meter freestyle, registering a time of 29.76.
Friday's football toss was more than an attempt at setting a world record. It was a real town and gown event. For a story, photos and video, click here.

Before we ring your doorbell for Halloween, let’s revisit Friday’s world-record football toss attempt.
It involved all Ada school classes from 2019 to 2032, more ONU students and faculty than you could count, just about every village official you could name plus a supporting community cast who wouldn’t have missed it for the world-record setting event it was billed to be.
To help set the stage, imagine bussing nearly 1,000 Ada students from the school to the football stadium. That started at 11:30 a.m., with kick off – in this case, pass off – slated for 2 p.m.
Current and former Ohio Northern University students, in collaboration with faculty mentors, have been involved in a high-impact learning experience that resulted in the publication of an article in a prestigious research journal.
The article, “A predator-based psychosocial stress animal model of PTSD in females: Influence of estrous phase and ovarian hormones,” was published in the September 2019 edition of Hormones and Behavior.
The project was supported by a $411,453 research grant from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute that was awarded to ONU Associate Professor of Psychology Phillip Zoladz, Ph.D., and former ONU pharmacy faculty member Boyd Rorabaugh.
