Icon dog of the week - Duke

Meet Duke, Duke is a 6 month old male lab mix. He weighs 71 pounds. Can you provide a forever home for Duke?

To give a dog a forever home, contact the Hardin County dog shelter. It is located at 49 Jones Road on the west side of Kenton.

Hours: 9 am to 4 pm on Monday, Thursday, and Friday. Phone: 419-674-2209.

Generally, about 20 to 25 dogs are available for viewing.

The shelter is also the place to contact for giving up a dog, if you find a lost or stray dog, or if you come in contact with a vicious dog. It costs $20 to surrender a dog, which pays for deworming and immunizations for when it is rescued.

1904:

May 1904 Paving of Main Street began. Residents recalled “Swag Run” that crossed Main Street at the square (Buckeye Avenue) and “Lake Holder” owned by H.M. Holder back in the 40’s where the First National Bank stands. He finally filled the pool with ashes and saw dust.

December 1904 the foundation for the Rail Road tower to pneumatically operate protective gates at Main and Johnson was started. The tower was torn down in 1960.

Where to give shoebox donations

First Baptist Church  in Kenton will be a drop-off location for collecting gift-filled shoeboxes for Samaritan's Purse project Operation Christmas Child from Nov. 13-20. The church will collect shoebox donations filled with fun toys, school supplies and hygiene items for children living in poverty overseas.

For details about the project, go to samaritanspurse.org/occ.

Other nearby locations include Ebenezer Mennonite Church, Bluffton; Union Chapel Missionary Church, SR 81 west of Ada; and College First Church of God, Findlay.

A 5K that's really a fun run

Sit on four balloons, pop them, then it's on to the third and final challenge: walking (or running very carefully) with an egg on a spoon. The winner? The Dolly Pardon Imagination Library. Read Monty Siekerman's story below to understand what this is all about.

What a weekend in Ada

Estimated audience of 2,000 attend music feast

Story and photos by Monty Siekerman
The 40th annual Music Feast on Saturday drew an estimated 2,000 people to see one of the top (and oldest) swing choir competitions in the state.

The host Ada Varsity Singers gave an exhibition performance in the afternoon that filled the auditorium with Standing Room Only space and the group received a Standing O for their performance.

LOTS OF PHOTOS AT BOTTOM OF STORY -

Ada's Varsity Singers theme was "I See Fire" featuring 32 singers/dancers and 11 instrumentalists. Counting the 5 crew members, the group involves one-fifth of the students enrolled in high school.

"On your mark"...looks simple enough, the start of the Dolly Dash 5K/Fun Run at ONU on Saturday.

What makes it a Fun Run? Something to do with Oreos, balloons, and eggs.

See the photos below for the fun part of the Dash. Proceeds from the event go to the Dolly Pardon's Imagination Library, which is located in the library in Kenton.

Yes, college students get up early on a chilly Saturday morning in November to support a worthy cause and have a little fun along the way.
