Norovirus and Flu Season in Full Swing: Tips to help you avoid getting the flu

The Allen County Health Department reminds residents that we are in the midst of the influenza season in our area. 

This is also the time of the year that Norovirus, the virus that frequently causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps is reported in this area of the United States. 

These illnesses are seen in all age groups but increased rates typically occur in children.  

“It is common to see an increase in illness during this time of the year,” said Kathy Luhn, Allen County Health Commissioner.

ONU to present discussion on diversity awareness, initiatives in the NCAA

Floyd Keith, executive director of the Black Coaches and Administrators (BCA), will speak on diversity awareness and Anthony Holman, NCAA assistant director of championships and alliances, will speak on diversity initiatives in the ONU Sports Center on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m.

The event, free and open to the public, is made possible through an NCAA grant for student athletes and is being held in conjunction with ONU’s celebration of Black History Month.

What year are you at Ada High School?
I’m a senior.

What are your plans after high school?
I’ve been accepted at Ohio State University, Columbus. I plan to double major in psychology and criminal justice studies. After college I want to obtain a master’s and then a doctorate. I hope to attend John Jay College of Criminal Studies for those degrees. So, I’d like to become a forensic psychologist.

Is that what you wanted to be when you were little?
No, I wanted to be a doctor, but then in high school I received terrible grades in math and science.

Shirley's of Bluffton offers two popcorn flavors of the month

There's two flavors of the month at Shirley's Gourmet Popcorn Co. of Bluffton in February, according to Peter Suter.
  
"The arrival of February brings one of your favorite flavors back to Shirley's - Oreo-White Chocolate," he said. "We begin with our sweet red candy-coated popcorn, mix in lots of crushed up Oreo cookies, then top it off with smooth white chocolate. If you took this photo today it would probably have to be taken in the football stadium. Here's a photo of the Ohio Northern University students, faculty and staff from 1909. The photo brings to mind several questions:

• How long did it take to pose the shot?
• How long did everyone have to stand perfectly still?
• What type of scaffold was used by the photographer (it was a rather large camera)
• Without a microphone, how did the photographer grab everyone's attention.

Lovejoy's pin leads No. 18 Wrestling to 21-17 victory over No. 30 Mount Union in battle of OAC unbeatens

Sophomore Cody Lovejoy posted a second-period pin in the final bout of the night to help No. 18-ranked Ohio Northern to a 21-17 victory over No. 30-ranked Mount Union in a battle of Ohio Athletic Conference wrestling unbeatens Tuesday evening at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears improve to 14-2 and remain undefeated and in first place in the OAC at 3-0, while the Purple Raiders fall to 6-3, 2-1.

Lovejoy got his team-best 16th pin of the season in 4:51 in the heavyweight class as ONU rallied from a 17-12 deficit to win its 13th consecutive OAC regular season dual match.
