Symphony Orchestra presents ‘Pines and Mountains’ concert Oct. 15
The Ohio Northern University Symphony Orchestra will present the concert, “Pines and Mountains,” at 8:15 p.m. on Oct. 15 in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts. The concert is presented by the ONU Department of Music.
Music Director Travis Jürgens will conduct the ONU Symphony Orchestra for the concert, which will open with music from “Jurassic Park” by John Williams, followed by composer Jeff Midkiff’s “Mandolin Concerto.” The composer is also the guest soloist for this piece.
According to Midkiff, the piece was first performed in fall 2011 by the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. Midkiff has a deep love for the mandolin, and, despite playing as a clarinetist, he was determined to create a style all his own using the mandolin. The “Mandolin Concerto” mixes elements of jazz with bluegrass.
Other works on the program include Edvard Grieg’s “Peer Gynt Suite 1” and the “Pines of Rome” by Ottorino Respighi.
Tickets for the concert can be purchased from the Freed Center for the Performing Arts box office. Prices are $20 for adults, $15 for ONU faculty and staff members, $10 for seniors and $5 for all students and children. The Freed Center box office is open Monday through Friday, noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets can also be bought online at www.onu.edu/freed or over the phone at 419-772-1900.
