ONU Symphony to perform world premiere Feb. 26
The music department will present the Ohio Northern Symphony concert “Glory, War and Peace” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26, in the Freed Center. The concert will feature a world premiere by guest composer Nathan Pangrazio.
The suite is in reference to the Civil War and will include several movements.
Pangrazio is an Emmy-winning composer with an extensive background in classical training as a composer, a pianist, a choral conductor and a singer. He was recognized at an early age as a remarkable and prodigious composer, and at 15 he was commissioned to write his first piece that achieved widespread attention.
Also on the program is a Chinese work, “Ye Shen Chen,”performed by guest soloist Shengyuan Tong on the erhu. This traditional Chinese instrument, and others, will be featured in this piece. Assistant Conductor Chang Tong will conduct this work.
Other pieces on the program include music from “The Lord of the Rings,” “Sheep May Safely Graze” by J.S. Bach, and “Music for the Royal Fireworks” by Handel, which was composed to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Aix-La-Chapelle. This peace treaty marked the end of the War of the Austrian succession.
Following the concert, guest composer Pangrazio will host a Q&A session, sponsored by ONU’s Cultural Affairs and Special Events committee.
