Romanian teenage musicians here
Four teenage Romanian musicians, all of whom are string players, are visiting ONU this week to share their skills.
Anamaria Joldea and Estera Racz will present a recital at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3 in Presser Hall. Radu Kis and Maria Marica will perform as soloists with the Ohio Northern Symphony at 7:30 p.m. on May 6 in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts. Joldea and Racz also will perform with the symphony during the concert.
The Romanian students will attend classes, lessons and rehearsals while interacting with ONU students and faculty members throughout the week.
The Romanian students, who range in age from 15 to 18, were selected through a competition in their home country in May 2016 during a visit by Rebecca Casey, chair of ONU’s music department; Rachel Pinkney, lecturer in music at ONU; and Florin Simioanca, a native of Romania and lecturer in music at ONU; along with seven ONU student pianists and violinists.
“This entire endeavor began with a trip we took to Romania last spring,” Casey said. “The Romanian students are incredibly talented, and this is a wonderful opportunity for the visiting students as well as our own to experience another culture and learn from each other. In Romania, music is a big part of their culture.”
The Romanian students, who are accompanied by a music instructor, Marinela Tudoran, will also visit the Detroit Symphony, the Toledo Museum of Art and the Toledo Zoo.
The U.S. Embassy provided funding for some of the travel costs for the trip to the United States.
