First 100 years of the library
Rhett Grant, new Ada Public Library director, shows his wife Jenny some of the historical documents describing the first 100 years of the library.
He gave a talk on Saturday morning about the library's history, although he just came to town from a suburb of Atlanta just a few weeks ago.
History is one of his areas of interest, so although he is new to the community he has already learned a lot about where he works.
The Ada Icon is posting his history of the library in three parts this week.
Not only is Rhett, the staff, and library board in the midst of a centennial celebration, the library is beginning construction of an addition and renovation of the present facilities, which bode well for the next century of library service to patrons of the Ada area.
Here's the schedule of other library centennial events:
Aug. 1-31. Read through the decades, a reading challenge, the classics of the past 100 years.
Sept. 16, 11 a.m. Children can make crafts that children made through the years.
Oct. 23., 5:30 p.m. Centennial Spooktacular, bring a carved jack o' lantern to the library for judging. Winners receive a sweet treat.
Nov. 16, 6 p.m. Centennial celebration of cake and punch on the eve of the 100th year.
Dec. 6, 6 p.m., Centennial beard contest, winner gets a gift certificate. Put the shaver away.
