ADA — The Ohio Northern men's soccer team saw eight different athletes score as ONU defeated Anderson (Ind.) 8-0 on Tuesday evening at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 7-2-1 overall with the victory, while the Ravens drop to 5-4-1.
ONU scored early and often in the contest as senior Grant Cayot (Roanoke, Ind./Blackhawk Christian) scored after the AU keeper mishandled Cayot's shot to give ONU a 1-0 in the second minute of the contest.
Minutes later in the seventh minute, freshman Beelal Hasan (Westerville/Thomas) scored his second goal of the season after finding a ball in traffic and scoring from 10 yards out.
The Polar Bears wasted no time adding to their lead in the second half, as Cayot found senior Mac Tompkins(Fairview, Pa.) on the left wing to help push the lead to 3-0.
In the 54th minute, senior Cory Lains (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community) made his way past an Anderson defender from the left wing and found the back of the net to extend the lead to 4-0.
Less than a minute later senior J.J. Fortner (Maumee/Anthony Wayne) dribbled up the center of the field and scored on a strike from 15 yards out, pushing the lead to 5-0.
The scoring barrage would continue in the 64th minute as freshman Zachary Yoder (Goshen, Ind./Kamiakin) found fellow freshman Jacob Scheufler (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) with a touch pass into the center of the field, before Scheufler capitalized to give ONU a 6-0 advantage.
In the 73rd minute, senior Colin Johnson (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) scored his second goal of the season after freshman Sergio Bugarin (Murietta, Cal./Murietta) played a quick ball through traffic and found Johnson for the score.
Northern would cap the victory in the 79th minute as senior Ben Conkin (Maumee/Anthony Wayne) capitalized on a penalty kick to seal the 8-0 victory.
Freshman Dylan Plank (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim) earned the victory in the goal, posting his third shutout of the season and improving his record to 6-1-0 on the year.
Northern returns to action on Saturday evening as it travels to Alliance to take on Mount Union and open Ohio Athletic Conference play at 7 pm.
