Dale E. Simon, 1918 - 2017
Dale E. Simon, age 99, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on September 30, 2017 at St. Rita's Hospital.
He was born on April 19, 1918 in Hancock County, Ohio to Edward "Dutch" and Rosa (Badertscher) Simon, who preceded him in death.
On April 14, 1937, he married Ella Craig and she passed away on May 21, 1968.
He then married Doris Carte on July 18, 1970, she survives in Ada.
Dale was very proud of his work record which started at age 8 in the Hog Creek Marsh, weeding onions earning $2.50 for a ten hour day, six days a week.
Then he worked in the bowling alleys in Ada setting pins at 2 cents a line.
Those earnings went home to his family.
As an adult Dale worked at Wall's Auto Parts and Icehouse, earning 10 cents per hour and working 90 hours per week.
He also earned an additional 20 cents per hour unloading railroad cars of coal.
In 1942 he began working for Westinghouse as a machinist and group leader, retiring after 38 years in 1980.
He attended Ada Schools.
He was an avid fan of Ada High School football and basketball, Ohio State football and basketball, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Cleveland Browns.
In his younger days, Dale loved fishing, hunting, bowling, and square dancing. He and his wife enjoyed traveling together. He especially loved spending time with family and friends, sharing his life stories as a way of passing on history.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff on the 4K Unit of St. Rita's for their attentive care of both Dale and our family during his final days.
Their kindnesses and support were a comfort during this difficult time.
He is also survived by three daughters, Jean (David) Kissling Gahanna, Jody (Jerry) Ritter of Springboro, and Linda (Bob) Kohl of Elkhart, IN; one son-in-law, Jerry DeGuire of Northwood; 11 grandchildren, Vicki (LeVon) Harper, Debbie Foster, Annette (Rob) Richardson, Diana (Don) Jander, Troy (Beth) Holtrey, Tracy (Mark)
