Crestview’s stingy defense too much for Ada

By Dusty Donley

Both offenses put on a first half show in Covoy last Friday night, but stingy Crestview defense kept Ada out of the end zone in the second half, propelling the Knights to a 49-21 victory.  The tough conference loss drops the Bulldogs to 2-2 in the NWC and 4-3 overall.

The Knights opened the first quarter scoring when Crestview quarterback Drew Kline found Derick Dealey for a 2-yard touchdown.  Dylan Hicks’ extra point was good, putting the Knights in front 7-0 with 7:24 remaining in the quarter.

Crestview would strike again moments later when Kline connected with Charles Stefanek, who broke a tackle and rumbled in for a 50-yard score.  Hicks’ point after kick was good, giving the Knights a 14-0 lead with just over four minutes to play in the opening quarter.

The Bulldogs would respond on their ensuing possession as senior quarterback Seth Conley rifled a pass to “Mr. Friday Night,” Chase Sumner.  The senior wideout hit the turbo button and raced into end zone for a 39-yard touchdown.  Senior Aaron Everhart’s extra point kick was good, slicing the Crestview lead in half, 14-7 with 2:04 to go in the first.

The Knights wasted little time in pushing their lead back to two scores as Stefanek took Everhart’s kickoff at the Bulldog 15 and sliced and diced his way to an 85-yard touchdown return.  Hicks’ extra point kick was blocked, leaving the score 20-7 with just under two minutes to play in the quarter.

Undaunted, Conley and the Bulldog offense took the field and connected on a quick hitter of their own, as the senior gunslinger once again found Sumner, who raced 68-yards to the house.  Everhart’s kick was good, shrinking the Crestview lead to 20-14 with less than a minute to play in the first quarter.

The scoring outburst continued into the second quarter as Kline called his own number, slithering in for a 5-yard quarterback keeper.  The junior quarterback connected with Grant Schlagbaum for a 2-point conversion, pushing the Knight lead to 28-14 with 10:22 to play.

Stiff defense temporarily slowed both offenses, but Kline found a seam late in the quarter, hitting Wade Sheets for a long 81-yard touchdown.  Dylan Hicks’ kick was good, extending the Crestview lead to 35-14 with 1:51 to play in the half.

The Bulldogs added their final touchdown with under ten seconds to play in the quarter when Conley connected with sophomore Philip Coulson for a 5-yard score.  Erryk Katayama’s extra point kick was good, giving Crestview the 35-21 lead they would take into the half time locker room.

The Knights would add a 3-yard Trevor Gibson touchdown run, and a 52-yard Schlagbaum to Stefanek touchdown pass in the third quarter to give us a 49-21 final score.

Crestview outgained the Bulldogs in total offense, 436 to 254 yards.  Turnovers hurt Ada as they gave the ball away twice, while the Knights finished the game with none.

Bulldog quarterback Seth Conley finished the game 16 of 36 for 217 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Chase Sumner led the receivers with 9 grabs for 159 yards and two scores.

Ada returns home this Friday night to take on Paulding.  The Panthers (1-7, 0-5) are coming off a 7-6 loss to Allen East.  Game time is 7pm.
