Biking to Ada for a great cause
By Monty Siekerman
Many event organizers are happy to raise a few hundred dollars for charity while others aim for a few thousand; however, the bikers who came to Ada on Saturday raised between $100,000 and $125,000.
As temperatures approached 90 degrees and the heat index was nearing 100, the 200 bikers from the Dayton area arrived happy that they accomplished their feat. Applause and cheers from volunteers greeted them as they passed the finish line. Mr. Banana was there, and Jon Umphress let the siren rip as the bikers finished their day, all for good causes.
Their arrival is part of the annual Young’s Ice Cream Charity Bike Tour, an 83-mile (one way) jaunt from Yellow Springs to Ada and return. The bikers stayed the night in Affinity Village on campus before heading south again at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
.The purpose of the ride – in addition to the exercise – is raise funds and awareness for four charities. This year’s ride supports The Alzheimer’s Association, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, South Community Behavioral Healthcare and United Rehabilitation Services.
During its 16-year history, the Young Bike Tour has raised over $1.2 million.
