Ian McVey receives Great Lakes athlete of the year award
Senior All-American distance runner Ian McVey (Stow/Munroe Falls) has been named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Great Lakes Region Track Athlete of the Year for the 2019 indoor season, the national office announced Wednesday.
This season, McVey posted the fastest one-mile, 3,000-meter, and 5,000-meter run times and helped establish the third-fastest DMR time in the region. His 3,000 and 5,000 meter times are also among the top-ten times on the NCAA Division III national performance list.
In addition, the senior was crowned the Ohio Athletic Conference champion in the 3,000-meter run and finished second in the 5,000-meter run at the OAC Championships in February.
With his efforts this season, McVey reset the ONU school records in the 3k and 5k events. The Stow product raced to an 8:16.99 clocking in the 3,000 at the GVSU Big Meet and shattered the 5,000 record with a 14:20.45 performance at the GVSU Holiday Invite in December.
Earlier this week, McVey was awarded All-Great Lakes Region honors in the mile, 3,000, and 5,000 disciplines, giving him 10 career All-Region honors. He is also a one-time All-American in the outdoor 5,000, a 10-time All-OAC honoree, and a four-time OAC champion.
McVey will represent Ohio Northern this weekend at the 2019 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston, Massachusetts. He is slated to compete in the 5,000 at 7:45 p.m. on Friday, March 8 inside the Reggie Lewis Center.
